I'm only gluten-intolerant which means I won't get super sick if I do have gluten, but I will cramp up, have severe brain fog, get constipated and even have issues falling asleep at night [insomnia was a HUGE issue for me until I switched to gluten-free!]. And because of the varieties of Celiac and gluten-intolerance, people just don't get it. I hope that you don't allow silly, ignorant comments to bother you!! You are doing what is best for YOUR body. :)Kathttp://www.katalysthealthblog.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4448143605565048667.post-62438677409516145372016-09-25T17:49:19.836-07:002016-09-25T17:49:19.836-07:00What the gal said to you about wishing she had cel...What the gal said to you about wishing she had celiac because she wanted to be skinny is astonishing. I do not have celiac, but my sister-in-law does, and she is so so much happier at her current weight without the digestive misery.
As you may know, I avoid wheat because of the FODMAPs--the fructans in the wheat that upset my stomach. But I think it's really important for folks to be aware of the distinction between wheat-free and celiac-safe. Celiac is a very serious condition, and while going gluten-free can reduce some (not all) digestive problems, people need to be aware that celiac is not just a sensitivity.
Also, potatoes ftw!Joyce @ The Hungry Caterpillarhttp://www.thehungrycaterpillar.net/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4448143605565048667.post-20137615629086748262016-09-25T14:05:44.978-07:002016-09-25T14:05:44.978-07:00I'm so happy to hear that you and your daughte...I'm so happy to hear that you and your daughter found out what was causing your issues and have adopted a diet that works for you! It always amazes me how differently celiac disease can affect people; some are too skinny, others overweight, and some even have no visible symptoms at all! If anything, both are stories just shows that people - and doctors, especially - can't judge a book by its cover. Sometime, it's up to us to advocate and find out what we can do to improve our own lives! Stay happy and healthy! :)collegeceliackchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01388041860986251588noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4448143605565048667.post-20279637733586377612016-09-21T10:21:34.991-07:002016-09-21T10:21:34.991-07:00Yes, yes, yes! My daughter suffered for years (since she was 5) with all sorts of "stomach problems" & until her hair began to fall out no Dr. could figure it out. She was always very thin. I, on the other hand, was just plain fat. Always had a stomach ache, and by the time she was diagnosed in her mid-20's, I was so worried about her, I thought my multiple times a day unexplained throwing up was nerves and worry over her health situation. When I began to research how to make my home safe for her to visit, I discovered I fit the description for other symptoms. I went to her same Dr. who laughed at me! Fortunately, we have a good relationship, and I knew she was thinking the same as I, "none of her Celiac patients were fat!" But my TTG numbers were almost at 500 and my further more invasive exams showed extensive stomach damage. We were all surprised! How happy we all were to finally have an answer for both my daughter and me! At first I tried everything gluten free out there. But now, I agree totally with you. I love the way whole, healthy, natural foods make me feel. I am still not yet thin or even where I would like to weigh, but I do feel so much healthier. The gluten free world has changed a lot in these last 9 years and there are so many resources out there now. I am grateful for the expertise of those who share their recipes and knowledge/experiences. We'll just have to keep educating those on the fad wagon. Stay healthy!
